2008년 발표된 1차대전 치열했던 전투 중 하나인 Passchendaele전투를 배경으로한 캐나다 영화이다.
영화는 주인공 Michael Dunn이 1917년 Vimy Ridge전투에 참여하다 부상당하는 것으로 시작한다. 병원에서 간호사 Sarah Mann과 연인의 감정을 느낀다. 부상으로 인해서 고향에 돌아가서 군인들을 징집하는 일을 하다가 Sarah를 다시 만나고.. 그의 동생인 David Mann이 독일계 이민자로서 겪는 차별과 아버지와의 갈등등으로 인해서 천식이 있음에도 불구하고 참전하게 된다. 이에 어느정도 책임감을 느낀 Michael은 David을 지키기 위해 어머니 성으로 바꿔가며 다시 참전한다. Sarah도 다시 참전한다. 그리고 Passchendaele전투...지원병이 오지 않는 상황에서 David은 무리한 돌격을 하다 포격으로 인해서 십자가에 매달린 형태처럼 나무에 걸리게 되고, Michael은 역시 David을 구하기 위해 무리하게 돌격한다.
재미: 전투 장면은 처음 일부, 그리고 후반부 잠깐 나온다. 그 외에는 주요 인물들이 겪는 갈등들.. 따라서 개인적으론 전반적으론 지루한 편이었다.
인상적인 장면들: 감독이 고증에 철저하게 힘을 썼다고 한다. 특히 캐나다 군이 진흙탕 전장을 널판지 밟고 건너는 사진등을 재현하려고 했다. 그리고 1차 대전 전쟁터의 처참함을 잘 보여준다. 전투장면은 길지 않지만 역시 처참함과 안타까움을 잘 보여준다. 후반부에 비록 캐나다 지원군이 도착하기는 하지만 여기서는 캐나다군이 이겼다기 보다는 참담함에 초점을 두기때문에 굳이 극적인 승리를 묘사하진 않았다.독일계 이민자들이 겪은 차별도 처음 알았다.
정리: 1차대전의 참담한 모습과 당시의 캐나다와 군대의 모습을 느끼기에는 좋은 영화다.
